Cathedral of the Holy Saviour, Adigrat

The Cathedral of the Holy Saviour combines traditional Ethiopian architectural elements with contemporary design features throughout its stone exterior and interior spaces.

Established in 1969 on the Welwalo site, this cathedral emerged from its initial status as a parish church following the creation of the Ethiopian Catholic Eparchy.

Ethiopian artist Afewerk Tekle created a substantial mural titled Giudizio Universale inside the cathedral in 1970, representing local artistic expression in religious context.

The cathedral maintains regular mass schedules and welcomes visitors to participate in religious ceremonies throughout the week at its central location in Adigrat.

This religious structure exemplifies the adaptation of Catholic architectural principles to Ethiopian building traditions, creating a distinct regional interpretation.
