Santa Pau, Medieval municipality in Garrotxa, Spain
Santa Pau is a medieval municipality in Catalonia, defined by a main square framed by curved stone arcades. Narrow cobblestone streets lead from this center to a 13th-century castle, which forms the oldest structure in the settlement.
The municipality began in the 13th century when Baron Hugo de Santa Pau built a fortified settlement around the castle. This founding coincided with the Reconquista, a period of territorial reorganization in the region.
The annual Bean Fair celebrates the protected status of Santa Pau white beans and draws farmers and cooks from across the region. Local cooking revolves around these legumes, which play a starring role in many traditional dishes.
The municipality lies within the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, where a visitor center offers maps and guides. The hilly terrain with numerous walking trails makes comfortable shoes and time for exploration essential.
The soil here formed from ancient lava flows, giving local white beans a special mineral richness. This volcanic origin allows farmers to grow crops in exceptionally nutrient-rich ground.
