Acci, Ancient Roman settlement near Purullena, Spain
Acci was a Roman city near Guadix featuring public buildings, temples, and residential quarters arranged across multiple areas. The ruins reveal the layout of a thriving settlement with organized districts and social spaces from the ancient period.
The city was founded as Colonia Julia Gemella Accitana and became an important center under Roman rule. It prospered especially during the reign of early emperors including Augustus and Tiberius.
The people of this Roman settlement honored Mars under the local name Netos, as shown on coins minted there. This religious practice reveals how local beliefs merged with Roman traditions in daily worship.
The archaeological site sits about 6 kilometers northwest of Guadix and is accessible for walking exploration. Wear sturdy shoes and bring sun protection, as the exposed ruins receive direct sunlight across open ground.
Excavations have uncovered a remarkable collection of coins bearing symbols of the Third and Sixth Roman Legions. These finds suggest that soldiers from these military units traded or were stationed in the settlement.
