Tolosa, Historic municipality in Tolosaldea, Spain
Tolosa is a municipality in the Gipuzkoa province of the Basque Country, where three rivers meet and forests cover the nearby slopes. The old town sits on the left bank of the Oria and shows houses with wooden and stone balconies.
The town received royal privileges in the 13th century and became an important trade center between Castile and the coast. Wars and fires changed the townscape several times, but the street layout remained.
The carnival takes place on Shrove Tuesday and draws visitors from across the region who parade through the streets singing old songs. This celebration shows how important folk music and community festivals remain for people here.
The train station connects the municipality with San Sebastián and other nearby places, so visitors can arrive without a car. Walking is the best way to explore, as many alleys are narrow and the main squares concentrate in the old town.
The town hall holds a bell that is almost 400 years old and still rings on special occasions today. This bell survived the fires that destroyed other parts of the building.
