Castle of Xabier

Castle of Xabier stands on a hilltop in Navarre with multiple buildings reflecting different construction phases. The complex includes towers and residential spaces from medieval times through later periods, forming an intricate architectural whole.

The castle has foundations from the 10th century with Islamic traces, but was later incorporated into Navarrese territory by Sancho VII. This combination of earlier structures and regional claims shaped the site's development over subsequent centuries.

The Tower of Homage houses a museum honoring Saint Francis Xavier, displaying religious artwork and objects spanning different periods. This space connects personal history with spiritual devotion in a direct way.

Visiting is best done through guided tours that explain the different rooms and architectural features. Sturdy footwear is advisable since the hilltop location means steep paths and some unpaved areas.

Medieval murals depict the Dance of Death, an artistic representation of mortality and human transience. A Late Gothic crucifix in the chapel completes the religious art collection with distinctive details.
