Viveiro

Viveiro is a coastal town in Lugo Province facing the Cantabrian Sea, with a historic center shaped by three surviving gates from its medieval walls: Vila, Valado, and Castelo da Ponte. These gates still frame the old town area and show how the fortified settlement was once organized.

The town developed as a fortified coastal settlement with walls and strategic gates that controlled trade and defense during medieval times. Several religious buildings such as San Pedro and Santa María churches and the Concepción monastery were built during this period and still define its character.

The Carnival here represents one of Galicia's oldest celebrations, drawing crowds each year with four days of festivities before Lent. The celebration fills the old town with music, costumes, and traditions that remain central to local identity.

This place draws many visitors especially in summer months, when the population triples and coastal life and traditional festivals reach their peak. The best time to explore is during these months when beaches, local markets, and events are in full swing.

A major annual festival called Rapa das Bestas takes place on the first Sunday in July and keeps an ancient tradition alive where locals gather to cut horse manes and brand them. This event draws onlookers each year who seek this rare glimpse into old rural practices.
