Sos del Rey Católico, Medieval municipality in Cinco Villas region, Zaragoza Province, Spain

Sos del Rey Católico sits elevated at 652 meters and features stone buildings, defensive walls, and seven gates arranged along narrow streets. The settlement spans a substantial territory with a layout typical of medieval mountain towns.

The settlement evolved from a medieval border fortress into an important administrative center for the region. Ferdinand II of Aragon was born here and played a key role in this transformation.

The Jewish quarter near Plaza de la Sartén preserves medieval houses and narrow passages that reveal how different religious communities lived together in this settlement. The stone buildings and winding streets reflect the everyday coexistence of people from different backgrounds during that era.

The best approach to the town is via routes A-68 and C-127 through Gallur. Visitors will find lodging in restored rural buildings and traditional structures throughout the area.

The Romanesque church of San Esteban holds proto-Gothic frescoes within its crypt, a rare artistic style to find in this region. From this vantage point, visitors can see the Pyrenees on both the Spanish and French sides on clear days.

The region displays Moorish towers in Teruel, Romanesque churches in the Pyrenees and Gothic bridges along ancient trade routes. Natural parks protect limestone canyons, caves holding prehistoric paintings and mountain ranges extending to the French border. Visitors explore fortified villages such as Albarracín and Sos del Rey Católico, where stone walls and narrow lanes tell of medieval life. The 11th-century Castillo de Loarre stands on a hilltop overlooking the Ebro valley, while Sierra de Guara Natural Park provides trails through deep gorges.
