Cave of Las Monedas, Prehistoric art cave in Puente Viesgo, Spain.

The Cave of Las Monedas is a limestone cavity with a network of natural chambers decorated with stalactites and stalagmites extending deep into the earth. Its walls feature black animal drawings created by early people who used these passages long ago.

The cave became known in the 16th century when coins were discovered inside and gave it its current name. The animal drawings on the walls date from a much earlier period, thousands of years before those coins were lost.

The cave displays animal figures drawn in black pigment on its walls, showing creatures that lived during prehistoric times. These images reflect how ancient people experienced and hunted the animals in their environment.

The cave can only be visited on organized tours that open access to one section of the system for guests. It is wise to arrive early and wear comfortable shoes, as the ground is uneven and sometimes wet.

The cave takes its name from coins found inside, but its greatest treasures are the ancient animal drawings on its walls. These artworks reveal how important certain creatures were to the people who lived here thousands of years ago.
