Málaga-Costa del Sol, International airport in Churriana, Spain
Málaga-Costa del Sol is an international airport in the Churriana district, situated around 8 kilometers southwest of the city center. The complex includes three passenger terminals and ranks among Spain's four largest aviation hubs, offering connections to numerous European cities.
Operations began in 1946 as a small regional airfield serving domestic routes. A second runway opened in 2012 to handle the sharp rise in international passenger traffic that followed decades of coastal tourism growth.
The facility links mainland Spain with North African cities such as Tangier and Marrakesh, creating a crossroads where Mediterranean and Arab travel routes meet. At the arrival gates, you often see large groups greeting each other in Arabic or Berber, while families from northern Europe gather their beach gear.
The C1 train line connects the terminals directly to the main railway station and stops at major coastal towns along the route. Buses and taxi ranks are located right outside the arrival areas of all three terminals.
The facility has received multiple awards for barrier-free infrastructure, including dedicated waiting areas for travelers with reduced mobility. It also achieved Level 3 Optimization status in the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program, documenting active measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
