Belchite Viejo

The abandoned stone buildings of Belchite stand in a semi-arid plain, displaying crumbling walls and a damaged clock tower from the 1937 battle.

The town endured intense fighting between Republican and Nationalist forces during a two-week siege in August 1937, resulting in its complete destruction.

Ernest Hemingway and other international journalists documented the battle of Belchite, contributing to global awareness of the Spanish Civil War events.

Visitors can access the ruins through guided tours, with tickets available at the tourist information office in the new town of Belchite.

Franco preserved the destroyed town as a memorial, leaving residents to live among the rubble for fifteen years until a new settlement was built in 1954.
