La Malena, Roman archaeological site in Azuara, Spain
La Malena is a Roman villa in Azuara featuring a main residence arranged around a central courtyard with elaborate mosaic floors throughout. The structure displays the typical rectangular layout of a wealthy Roman home with multiple rooms and well-preserved decorative elements still visible today.
The villa was inhabited between the 1st and 5th centuries and reflects the Roman presence in the region during this period. Excavations conducted in the late 20th century uncovered numerous artifacts including coins, rings, and glass objects that offer insight into daily life at the time.
The site contains over 1000 square meters of mosaics, including the notable Marriage of Cadmus and Harmonia mosaic, constructed with marble limestone and glass paste.
Access is from Azuara and parking and visitor facilities are available at the site. Walking through the excavated remains at your own pace is the best way to explore the preserved mosaic floors and structures on display.
The Friends of La Malena Association formed in 2016 to protect the site, leading to the establishment of a dedicated museum in Azuara in 2017.
