Tui, Border municipality in Pontevedra Province, Spain.

Description

Tui sits on a hill directly above the Miño River and forms the western border of Galicia with Portugal. Steep cobbled lanes climb between old stone houses toward the cathedral, while down by the riverbank two bridges link the town to the Portuguese side in Valença.

History

Romans founded a settlement called Tude here in the first century and marked its location on their road to Braga with a milestone honoring Emperor Claudius. Later the town became a bishop's seat in the 12th century, which led to the construction of its present cathedral.

Culture

The name comes from the Roman settlement Tude, which gradually shifted over centuries into its current form. Visitors today find a living border town where Spanish and Portuguese sound side by side in markets and shops, and locals switch easily between both languages.

Practical

The old town is best explored on foot, as many streets are steep and narrow. Those heading to the riverbank can cross into Portugal from there on foot or by car via either of the two bridges.

Did you know?

Pilgrims on the Portuguese Way begin here the final stretch of 116 kilometers (72 miles) to Santiago de Compostela. Those who complete this route receive at the end the official pilgrimage certificate, called the Compostela.
