Alonsotegi, Municipality in Greater Bilbao, Spain
Alonsótegui is a municipality in Greater Bilbao situated in the Cadagua River valley, about 8 kilometers north of downtown. It connects to neighboring areas via Highway BI-636, which follows the river corridor through the region.
The town became independent in the 16th century but was merged with Baracaldo in 1888. It regained its separate status on January 1, 1991, when it reestablished itself as an autonomous municipality.
Both Spanish and Basque are spoken daily in the town. Local residents maintain strong ties to regional traditions and local customs that shape daily life.
The area uses postal code 48810 and sits in a river valley that can be muddy or slick in wet weather. Plan for potentially changeable conditions and wear appropriate footwear when exploring on foot.
The landscape is shaped by the Ganekogorta and Sasiburu mountain ranges, with traces of historical mining activity visible in the terrain. Traditional ice houses, once used for harvesting frozen water in winter, still stand scattered across the area as relics of old practices.
