Pagasarri, Mountain summit in Biscay, Spain.
Pagasarri is a mountain summit on the border of Bilbao, Arrigorriaga, and Alonsotegi in the Basque Country, reaching about 670 meters (2,200 feet) above sea level. Several marked trails lead to the top from different starting points, and a small mountain shelter near the summit offers a place to stop and rest.
The name Pagasarri comes from Basque and points to the beech forests that once covered much of the mountain's slopes. Over the centuries, most of those woods were cleared, which is why the landscape looks quite open compared to what it once was.
Every weekend, people from Bilbao of all ages make the climb up Pagasarri as a shared routine rather than a special event. Near the summit, it is common to see groups eating together at the shelter, turning a simple hike into a social gathering.
The most used trails start from the Pagasarri neighborhood in Bilbao, which is reachable by bus, and the climb takes roughly one and a half to two hours depending on the route. Weekends draw large numbers of people, so a weekday visit is worth considering if you prefer a quieter experience.
On a clear day, the top of Pagasarri offers views of both the Bilbao estuary and the mountain ranges further inland, a combination that is rare for a summit of this modest height. The mountain also sits close enough to the city that some runners use it for early morning training before work.
