Hermitage of Saint Peter

The Hermitage of Saint Peter is a Romanesque building with a rectangular nave and an apse featuring a barrel vault, with rounded arches throughout the structure. The interior shows simple, well-proportioned forms typical of religious buildings from the 12th century in northern Spain.

The building dates to the early 12th century and ranks among the oldest hermitages in the province of Biscay. Over the centuries, the structure shows influences from different building periods that remain visible in its original features.

Roman funeral stones and early builder marks are visible within the walls, showing how craftspeople identified their work across generations. Visitors can notice these details and understand how skilled knowledge passed through this region over time.

The building sits near Arrigorriaga, roughly seven kilometers north of Bilbao, and is accessible via several routes. Walking access to the hermitage is straightforward, and the surrounding area offers quiet countryside to explore.

The building shows traces of Visigothic influences visible in the stonework and certain architectural details. This blend of different building styles within the Romanesque framework makes it a rare example of the transition periods in northern church architecture.
