Las Ventas, Bullring in Madrid, Spain
Las Ventas is a bullring in eastern Madrid, Spain, known for its neo-Mudéjar façade of red brick and ceramic tiles. The oval arena measures around 197 feet (60 meters) in width and holds close to 24,000 spectators across multiple tiers.
The arena opened in 1931 and replaced the old bullring near Puerta de Alcalá. The design came from architect José Espeliú and draws on Andalusian architectural traditions.
The name comes from old market stalls that once stood here and the building displays red brick and ceramic tile decoration inspired by Moorish design. Visitors today can enter the chapel where bullfighters pray before entering the ring and explore the museum dedicated to the tradition.
The main entrance sits on Plaza de Toros and the site is easy to reach by public transport. Outside the bullfighting season the venue opens for guided tours and concerts, so checking the event calendar beforehand helps plan a visit.
The building is the third largest bullring in the world and is considered one of the most respected stages for bullfighters. A successful performance here often brings recognition across the entire profession.
