Canfranc, Mountain municipality in Huesca Province, Spain
Canfranc is a municipality in Huesca Province composed of two main settlements located at approximately 1,040 meters (3,400 feet) elevation. The original village and Canfranc Estación are spread across a mountainous territory with extensive natural surroundings.
King Sancho Ramírez of Aragón established this location between 1080 and 1090 as a strategic command post for border defense and tax collection for Jaca Cathedral. This foundation transformed it into an important administrative and commercial point in the region.
The name Canfranc comes from Campus Franci, meaning field of the Franks, reflecting its role as a stop on the Arles route of the Way of Saint James. Visitors can still sense this pilgrimage heritage in how the community is organized around the mountain passes and local traditions.
The location is accessible by train with daily connections to Zaragoza, making it convenient for exploring the surrounding region. Visitors should prepare for mountain terrain and variable weather conditions throughout the year.
Beneath the mountains runs the Somport Tunnel, which houses an underground laboratory conducting scientific research deep within the Pyrenees. This hidden research facility takes advantage of the mountain's natural protection for specialized experiments.
