Chillida-Leku, Sculpture garden and museum in Hernani, Spain

Chillida-Leku is a sculpture museum and garden spread across roughly 11 hectares, displaying large-scale metal and granite works alongside oak, beech, and magnolia trees. The pieces are shown both outdoors and inside the rooms of the historic farmhouse.

The museum opened in 2000 and transformed a renovated 16th-century farmhouse into an exhibition space for works by Eduardo Chillida. The conversion of the property into a park combined art presentation with preservation of the regional building.

The collection displays more than 40 monumental outdoor sculptures and smaller pieces within a restored traditional Basque building. Visitors can observe how the works relate to the surrounding space and local architectural heritage.

The site is accessible by public transport from San Sebastian and offers guided tours in multiple languages. It is advisable to wear comfortable footwear, as exploring the outdoor exhibition involves walking through the park.

Each sculpture is positioned according to precise calculations of sunlight angles, so lighting conditions shift with the seasons. This attention to natural light means the experience varies depending on when you visit.
