Hernani

Hernani is a municipality situated along the Urumea river valley, about 9 kilometers from San Sebastian at an elevation of 44 meters. The town spreads across both sides of the water, blending rural landscapes with residential areas.

The town was established in 1380 as a strategic point connecting inland routes to coastal areas. This positioning made it part of an important network of settlements in the region.

The town hosts traditional Basque celebrations that bring people together to dance and share regional customs. These gatherings show how the community maintains its local identity through seasonal events and performances.

The town is especially lively from January through May during cider season, when visitors come to local sagardotegiak establishments to eat and drink. This period offers the best chance to experience regional food and traditional beverages in authentic settings.

The Chillida Leku museum within the municipality displays works by sculptor Eduardo Chillida. The collection offers insight into modern Basque sculpture and occupies a dedicated site.
