Fuente de Cantos, municipality in the province of Badajoz, Spain
Fuente de Cantos is a small town in the province of Badajoz, in the southern part of the Extremadura region of Spain. It sits in an open agricultural landscape and is built around narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and a central square with the old stone fountain that gave the town its name.
The area around Fuente de Cantos was inhabited long before the Christian forces took control of it during the Reconquista in the 13th century. Over the following centuries it developed as a farming and herding community, shaped by the agricultural rhythms of southern Extremadura.
Fuente de Cantos is closely tied to the memory of Francisco de Zurbarán, and his name appears on streets, plaques, and public spaces throughout the town. A house museum dedicated to him draws visitors who might not otherwise stop in this part of Extremadura.
The town center is easy to walk around, and most points of interest are within a short distance of each other. Accommodation options are limited, so booking in advance is a good idea, especially if visiting in summer.
Zurbarán was born here in 1598, but the house where he grew up no longer stands: the current museum was built on the site of the original building. Inside, the displays use modern tools to show how his use of light and shadow worked, which gives the visit a hands-on feel rarely found in traditional art museums.
