The Province of Badajoz is an administrative region in western Extremadura, Spain, stretching along the Portuguese border. The Guadiana divides the territory into a northern plain with gentle hills and a southern area with mountains and pastureland.
The administrative structure arose in 1833 from territories previously shaped by Roman settlers, Moorish kingdoms and Christian conquerors. In the 19th century the railway connected the capital with the rest of the country.
The name comes from the Arabic Batalyaws and still echoes in the white houses of some villages. In inland squares people gather in the evening outside churches to watch the local activity.
Main roads run east to west and connect the larger towns with each other. In summer the heat can become very strong especially on the open plains.
Cork oaks grow in large numbers across the fields and supply material for part of global cork production. Harvesting is done by hand by carefully removing the bark from the trunk.
