Sant Ferran Castle, Military fortress in Figueres, Spain.

Sant Ferran is a fortress built on a hilltop near Figueres with thick walls and strategic defense positions throughout its layout. The structure follows Neoclassical design principles and includes underground passages and large water storage systems.

Construction began in 1753 under King Ferdinand VI of Spain, with architects directing the project following military design principles of the era. The fortress was completed decades later and served as a garrison throughout the 1800s.

The castle displays features of military engineering and today visitors can see the remains of barracks and living quarters that once housed soldiers. These spaces offer a glimpse into how daily life unfolded within the fortification.

Visitors can explore the site independently or join guided tours that show the underground passages and historical rooms. The terrain is hilly with steep pathways, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended for navigating the grounds.

The site witnessed a significant historical moment in 1939 when an important political gathering took place within its walls. Later the fortress also served in a different capacity, reflecting how it shifted roles beyond military purposes.
