Construction of Sant Ferran Castle began in 1753 under King Ferdinand VI of Spain, with architects Juan Martin Cermeno and Pedro Martin-Paredes Cermeno directing the project.
The castle represents Spanish military engineering excellence through its Neoclassical architecture, earning recognition as a Cultural Asset of National Interest.

The fortress held the final meeting of the Republican Spanish Cortes in 1939 and later served as an internment camp from 1940 to 1942.
