Figueres

Figueres is a regional capital in Alt Empordà, Catalonia, Spain, with a historic core full of Neoclassical facades and remnants of medieval walls. Streets around the Rambla run through the centre, where squares and old buildings shape the rhythm of the town.

King James I of Aragon granted the settlement royal charter rights in 1267, but four years later Count Ponç IV of Empúries burned the town down. Later it grew again and became the capital of the Alt Empordà comarca.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum draws visitors into a red building crowned with large white eggs and golden figures. Inside, many works by Salvador Dalí are on display, the artist having been born in this town and later buried here.

The high-speed rail station connects travellers to Barcelona in under an hour, while regional trains serve Girona and other destinations. The centre can be explored on foot, with cafés and shops lining the main streets.

The Castell de Sant Ferran, built in 1753, shows a pentagonal layout and ranks among the largest fortress structures in Europe. Visitors can enter long underground passages and wide inner courtyards that once housed thousands of soldiers.
