Dalí Theatre and Museum, Art museum in Figueres, Spain
The Dalí Theatre and Museum presents paintings, sculptures and installations across several floors in a former theatre from the 1800s now crowned with a glass dome. The exhibition spaces connect original theatre elements with newer additions designed by the artist himself.
Dalí opened the museum in 1974 on the site of the old municipal theatre that had been damaged during the Spanish Civil War. He continued working on the building and expanding the collections until his death in 1989.
The museum received the Saint George's Cross in 1997 for its contributions to Catalonian heritage through the preservation of Dalí's artistic vision.
The foundation manages the site and provides information materials in several languages. Given the high number of visitors, arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon helps avoid crowds.
Giant egg shapes decorate the roof of the building and reference a recurring symbol in Dalí's work. The exterior walls also feature bread-shaped ornaments that echo another frequent motif from the artist's creations.
