Rambla de Figueres, Pedestrian promenade in the center of Figueres, Catalonia

Rambla de Figueres is the main pedestrian promenade in the center of Figueres, Catalonia, lined with trees, cafes, shops, and buildings in different architectural styles. A monument to Narcís Monturiol stands along its central walkway, flanked on both sides by facades dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

In 1831, a stream called Galligans that ran through this part of the city was covered over, and the freed space was turned into a public promenade. In the second half of the 19th century, plane trees were planted and townhouses built, giving the street its current appearance.

The Rambla is where residents and visitors meet, sitting at cafe tables or strolling back and forth through the day. Near the Empordà Museum, a street-level artwork uses an optical trick to show the face of Salvador Dalí, the artist who was born in Figueres.

The promenade is open year-round and sits in the center of Figueres, within walking distance of the city's main attractions. Early morning or late afternoon are good times to walk along it, when the tree shade makes the route more comfortable.

After heavy rain, the ground beneath the promenade can give way because the covered Galligans stream still flows underneath. In 2014, a section of the paving near the Monturiol monument broke open due to water pressure from below.
