Museu Picasso, Art museum in Sant Pere district, Barcelona, Spain
The Museu Picasso is an art museum in Sant Pere district, Barcelona, displaying more than 4000 works across five adjoining Gothic townhouses. The rooms follow a chronological order and guide visitors through different creative phases and techniques.
The museum opened in March 1963 following the painter's express wish, who spent his formative years in Barcelona. The first collections came from friends and the artist himself, later supplemented by donations and acquisitions.
The collection sits inside five medieval palaces along Carrer de Montcada and focuses on works from the painter's youth. The many sketchbooks and studies on display can be found almost nowhere else in such quantity.
The entrance sits in the winding lanes of the old town and can be easy to miss, so arriving a few minutes early helps. On the first Sunday of each month and Thursday afternoons admission is free, but only with advance online booking.
The collection includes the painter's first major canvas, created when he was 16, along with many early academic pieces. Reinterpretations of a famous work by Diego Velázquez also fill an entire room.
