Museu Barbier-Mueller d'Art Precolombí, Pre-Columbian art museum in Gothic Quarter, Barcelona, Spain.

The Barbier-Mueller Museum of Pre-Columbian Art is an art museum located in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter that focuses on works from Mesoamerica, Central America, and the Andean regions. The collections display sculptures, masks, textiles, and ceremonial objects that showcase the artistic traditions developed by these civilizations.

The museum opened in 1997 within a 15th-century palace and was initially an extension of the Barbier-Mueller Museum from Geneva. The collection was later dispersed through major auctions, making the institution itself a significant chapter in the history of art collecting and preservation.

The objects on display come from burial sites and temple settings, revealing how people lived and what they valued in the Americas before European contact. You can see representations of gods, ritual offerings, and everyday items that show the beliefs and practices that shaped these ancient communities.

The museum sits on Montcada Street in the heart of the Gothic Quarter and is easy to reach on foot from several metro stations. The surrounding neighborhood consists of narrow medieval streets, so plan extra time for finding your way and wear comfortable shoes.

Until 2013 this was the only European museum dedicated solely to pre-Columbian art, making Barcelona an unexpected center for these rare collections. Learning that most works were later auctioned off reminds visitors they are witnessing a singular moment in art history.
