Valdepeñas

Valdepeñas is a municipality in Ciudad Real province in central Spain, located along the Jabalón River at an elevation of 705 m (2313 ft). Extensive vineyards surround the town and shape a landscape of rolling hills and limestone-rich soil.

Archaeological findings from the Bronze Age point to early settlements, including platforms and watchtowers scattered across surrounding hills. The modern winemaking tradition developed during the Middle Ages and grew over centuries into one of Spain's most important regions.

The name derives from 'valley of small rocks', referring to limestone outcrops scattered across surrounding fields. Wine cellars carved into these stone formations serve as cooling chambers that local producers still rely on today.

The town sits at the center of a winemaking area where numerous cellars welcome visitors. Access to most production sites follows the main roads branching from the municipality's central squares.

The limestone composition of the subsoil affects the temperature and humidity of wine storage spaces. Traditional producers have relied on this geological feature for generations to guide the aging process of their wines.
