Castillo de Santueri, Rock castle in Felanitx, Spain
Castillo de Santueri is a fortress perched on a rocky ridge in Felanitx at approximately 408 meters elevation that dominates the surrounding landscape. The structure consists of multiple towers including a square residential tower, a round bastion, and extended wall systems adapted to the uneven terrain.
The site had roots in Roman and Byzantine fortifications but was fundamentally rebuilt in the 14th century with new defensive elements added throughout. This significant renovation made it one of the strongest fortresses on the island.
The fortress is one of three rock fortifications on Mallorca, showing how builders integrated defensive structures directly into cliff faces and steep slopes. Its layout demonstrates a practical response to the natural landscape of Sierra de Levante.
The climb to the summit is steep and requires solid footing, especially on upper sections with exposed paths. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential since there are few shaded areas.
The fortress was a self-contained community with storage areas, cisterns, mills, and stables that enabled it to withstand lengthy sieges. This infrastructure shows how inhabitants could survive for weeks or months without outside supply lines.
