La Boqueria, Food market in El Raval, Barcelona, Spain
La Boqueria is a covered market hall in Barcelona's Barri Gòtic with iron beams and a glass roof in the Catalan Modernisme style. Fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and prepared foods are sold here at more than 300 stalls spread over roughly 2,580 square meters.
Street vendors began selling here around 1836 after the Sant Josep convent was dissolved and the site became available. The current metal facade and roof were built in 1914 to replace the older temporary coverings.
The official name Sant Josep comes from the former convent that stood here before the stalls were built. Vendors and customers speak Catalan with each other as they negotiate quantities or ask about the origin of the goods.
The main entrance is directly on La Rambla, a few steps from Liceu metro station. The hall opens Monday through Saturday from 8 AM to 8:30 PM and is closed on Sundays.
The metal structure of the 1914 facade carries colorful ceramic medallions depicting fruit, vegetables and fish. These ornaments were designed in the Catalan Modernisme style and frame the entrance to the hall.

Barcelona offers a wide range of architectural and cultural sites that reflect centuries of Catalan history. The city combines Gothic churches and medieval streets with the organic forms of Antoni Gaudí's modernist buildings. From the Sagrada Família to Parc Güell, his designs shape the cityscape, while the Gothic Quarter and palaces such as Palau Güell represent earlier periods. Museums including the Picasso Museum and Joan Miró Foundation illustrate the city's artistic legacy. Markets like La Boqueria and Sant Antoni provide insight into Catalan daily life. The waterfront district of La Barceloneta, the Olympic Port, and Montjuïc with its cable car and fountain broaden the range. Other destinations include Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, the Hospital de Sant Pau, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, and the Aquarium.
