Pont del Diable, Gothic stone bridge in Cardona, Spain
Pont del Diable is a Gothic stone bridge in Cardona that connects two neighborhoods across a valley. The structure features a large arched span and carries a small stone chapel built atop its center section.
Construction began in 1283 on Roman foundations and the bridge suffered heavy damage during the Spanish Civil War in 1939. It was later rebuilt and restored during the 1960s following extensive destruction.
The stone bridge represents medieval engineering techniques and stands as a Cultural Asset of National Interest in the Catalonian region.
The bridge is easy to walk across and remains open to foot traffic connecting different parts of town. Visitors can enjoy views of the surrounding landscape and study the medieval construction methods up close.
Parts of an original Roman arch from ancient times remain visible on the eastern side of the bridge. These remains show how different periods of construction history are layered on top of each other.
