Salt extraction in Cardona began during Neolithic times, with formal mining operations established in 987 when Count Borrell II created the Viscounty of Cardona.
The mountain provided essential salt resources to local residents, who received an annual allocation of 10 arrobas of their chosen quality salt until the 20th century.
The Cultural Park of Salt Mountain offers guided tours into former mining galleries, reaching 86 meters below ground to showcase industrial mining operations.
The salt deposits formed 250 million years ago during the Permian period when an ancient sea covered the region, creating substantial mineral accumulations.
