Trillo Nuclear Power Plant, nuclear power plant in Spain
The Trillo Nuclear Power Plant is a large facility located near the river Tajo in Trillo, Castilla-La Mancha, which has operated since 1988 to generate electricity for the region. The plant uses a pressurized water reactor of German design powered by uranium fuel and is jointly operated by several energy companies to ensure safe and continuous operation.
The plant was built in the late 1980s and began operations in 1988, making it the last nuclear facility to start operating in Spain that year. It has undergone regular maintenance and upgrades throughout its operation, with its current license valid until November 2034.
The plant is not accessible for tours without special permission, but there are viewing points from a distance where visitors can see the large cooling towers and other structures. The area around the facility is quiet and well-maintained, with green fields and small roads connecting to nearby villages.
The plant is one of only a few of its kind in Spain and contributes roughly 3% to the country's total electricity production while avoiding millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. This role makes it a key part of Spain's energy system and demonstrates the nation's technological capability.
