Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park, Natural park in Córdoba Province, Spain.
Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park is a protected area in Córdoba Province that covers extensive mountain ridges with dense Mediterranean forests. The landscape is dominated by cork and holm oak woodlands that provide habitat for diverse wildlife throughout the region.
The area gained its protected natural park status in 1989, marking an important step in conserving the ecological heritage of southern Spain. This designation enabled long-term management and protection of the region's natural resources.
Traditional hunting practices within the park maintain a balance between conservation and local customs, supporting both wildlife management and regional traditions.
The park can be accessed through four entry points located in the municipalities of Almodóvar del Río, Hornachuelos, Posadas, and Villaviciosa de Córdoba. These different entrances allow visitors to explore the protected area from various starting locations.
The area contains three large reservoirs - Bembézar, Breña, and Retortillo - that attract large populations of cormorants during winter months. These water surfaces serve as important stopover and feeding areas for migratory water birds.
