La Breña Reservoir, body of water
La Breña Reservoir is a large water storage facility in Córdoba Province composed of two main sections: one extending about 20 kilometers along the Guadiato River and another about 5 kilometers along the La Cabrilla stream. The water is held by a gravity dam and serves regional water supply, agricultural irrigation, and hydroelectric power generation.
The original dam was built between 1931 and 1935 but soon proved insufficient for the region's growing water storage needs. A new, larger gravity dam was constructed from 2005 to 2008 and remains Europe's largest structure of its kind.
The reservoir draws people from various regions who seek water sports, relaxation, and nature exploration. Visitors from different cities gather to try wakeboarding, fish, or simply enjoy the sunset from the viewpoint, creating a gathering place where outdoor activities and rest merge.
The reservoir is accessed via a narrow road passing through oak forests and climbing slightly upward. Visitors should bring sun protection, plenty of water, and comfortable footwear, especially if planning to walk trails or participate in water activities.
A section of the reservoir features an inland beach approved for swimming and recognized for water quality, a rarity in the province. Stretching about 140 meters, the beach offers parasols, showers, and a beach bar for visitors.
