Puente de Piedra, Stone arch bridge in Soria, Spain
The Puente de Piedra stretches across the Douro River with eight semicircular arches made of sandstone blocks and features protective cutwaters on its pillars.
First mentioned in documents from 1157, the bridge received restoration orders from the Catholic Monarchs and underwent repairs using materials from the nearby Santa Cristina church in 1538.
The medieval bridge originally included two defensive towers that controlled traffic and collected tolls, with the tower nearest to the city demolished in 1851.
The bridge was widened from 5 to 7.7 meters in 1915 through concrete cantilevers and now operates with traffic lights controlling one-way vehicle passage.
LED lighting installed in 2010 illuminates the inner parts of the arches with red, blue, and green hues, creating nighttime lighting effects.
