Convent of Nuestra Señora de la Merced, Soria, Gothic convent in Soria, Spain
The Convent of Nuestra Señora de la Merced is a Gothic building with a wide interior space topped by ribbed vaults that lead toward a five-sided sanctuary. The structure includes multiple interconnected courtyards where semicircular arches frame the walkways.
Mercedarian friars arrived in Soria in 1387 but lost their first home in a fire during 1499. A noblewoman then donated her palace to the order, and the current building was constructed on that site.
The convent is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Mercy, a name reflecting its original Mercedarian mission. Today visitors can experience how its historic rooms and courtyards serve educational and cultural events.
The site is open to visitors, especially during foundation-organized exhibitions and events. It works best to visit on quieter days when you can move through the courtyards and rooms at your own pace.
A sculpture by American artist Greg Wyatt stands in the garden, depicting two famous literary characters from different masterworks. The artwork honors connections between Spanish and English literary traditions.
