Las Cogotas

Las Cogotas is an archaeological settlement on a hill next to the Adaja River with stone fortifications and residential areas across multiple levels. The site includes a necropolis and is complemented by an interpretation center with exhibits.

The settlement originated in the Early Iron Age and shows evidence of two main occupation periods with trade connections and later Roman influence. The fortifications were adapted to meet the changing military challenges of each era.

The necropolis of Trasguija reveals how the Vettones buried their dead and what objects accompanied them in the grave. These burial practices offer glimpses into the beliefs and social organization of this ancient population.

The interpretation center provides details about the excavations and the lives of the original inhabitants through exhibits. Access to the archaeological site itself is free, allowing visitors to explore the remains of the structures directly.

The settlement featured specialized defensive elements like double walls and fields of pointed stones designed to repel cavalry attacks. These military innovations show how carefully the Vettones planned their fortifications against contemporary threats.
