Cuatro Postes in Ávila

Cuatro Postes in Ávila, Stone monument with four columns near Adaja River, Ávila, Spain.

Cuatro Postes is a monument with four Doric columns standing approximately 5 meters high on a raised platform near the Adaja River. The structure features a central granite cross and carved architraves displaying the city's coat of arms.

The monument was commissioned in 1566 when corregidor Rodrigo Dávila hired stonemason Francisco de Arellano to build it. It emerged during a period when such religious structures were commonly constructed throughout the region.

The site connects to Saint Teresa of Ávila's childhood story, when she and her brother were stopped here during their attempt to reach Moorish lands. This moment remains part of how locals understand their city's religious history.

The monument can be easily located from Ávila's city center by following signage, with parking available right at the observation point. Arriving in early morning or late afternoon provides the best light for viewing the structure and the surrounding landscape.

The central granite cross required replacement in 1995 after suffering damage, revealing how the structure endured various environmental pressures over the centuries. This intervention maintained the original appearance while strengthening the monument's durability.
