Roman arch of Medinaceli, Roman triumphal arch in Medinaceli, Spain
The Roman triumphal arch is a stone structure featuring three passages with a central opening of about two meters and two lateral openings on either side. The monument was constructed using opus quadratum technique and rises on a hilltop overlooking the Jalón valley.
The structure was built around 100 AD and marked a strategic point along Roman trade routes. It served both as a commemorative monument and as an entrance to the city, showing the importance of this location during Roman times.
The structure displays Roman architectural elements including fluted pilasters with Corinthian capitals and decorative moldings across its facade.
The monument sits on a hilltop and is accessible via designated walking paths within the town. The approach leads uphill through the settlement, and sturdy footwear is recommended since the ground can be uneven in places.
This is the only surviving three-arched Roman gate in Spain and uses the opus quadratum stone construction method. This technique of precisely cut blocks is characteristic of Roman craftsmanship and reveals the precision that builders achieved during that era.
