Casa de Piedra, Rock-carved house museum in Alcolea del Pinar, Spain.
Casa de Piedra is a dwelling carved entirely out of sandstone in Alcolea del Pinar, a small village in the province of Guadalajara. It has several rooms, a kitchen, and living areas cut directly into the natural rock face.
Lino Bueno began work on the dwelling in 1907 and finished it in 1928, carving the rock using basic iron tools over more than two decades. He carried out most of the work at night, spending his days on farmwork to support himself.
The house shows how a village man shaped his entire living space out of natural rock, using no building materials at all. Visitors can still see the chiseled shelves, fireplace, and furniture cut into the stone walls.
The house sits in the center of Alcolea del Pinar and entry is free, making it easy to visit without planning ahead. The interior floor is uneven rock, so sturdy shoes make the walk through much more comfortable.
The lower level of the house served as a stable, and carved drainage channels and feeding troughs are still visible in the rock. Electric cables were later threaded directly through the stone walls to bring power into the dwelling.
