Velòdrom Illes Balears, Velodrome and sports venue in Palma de Mallorca, Spain
Palma Arena is a large indoor sports facility in Palma de Mallorca built around a 250-meter track with 43-degree banking on the curves designed for high-speed cycling races. The multipurpose hall can be configured for basketball, volleyball, concerts, and other events, with seating capacity ranging from 6,600 to 8,000 depending on the setup.
The facility was constructed between 2004 and 2007 to position Mallorca as a host for major international sports events and opened with the 2007 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. The project experienced significant cost overruns and was later linked to corruption investigations, though it has continued operating as an active venue since its opening.
The venue is easily accessible by public transport and offers an on-site parking garage with about 350 spaces across two levels for visitors arriving by car. Check the event schedule in advance since different activities may use separate entrances and the overall flow of the space can vary considerably.
In 2007 the venue hosted an unusual tennis match where the court was split half clay and half grass, allowing Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to face each other on their preferred surfaces simultaneously. This rare experiment showcased the distinct abilities of both players and remains overlooked by many visitors.
