Art Gallery of Ontario, Art museum in Toronto, Canada
The Art Gallery of Ontario is an art museum in Toronto, Canada, presenting works from several centuries. The building stretches across an entire city block downtown and connects historical facades with modern glass extensions.
The building opened in 1900 as a small institution and grew through several expansions over the decades. Frank Gehry designed a new titanium and glass facade in 2008 and added contemporary spaces to the complex.
The name honors the province of Ontario and reflects its role as a public institution for the entire region. Visitors today experience several galleries showing both historical paintings and modern works in a single visit.
The entrance sits directly on Dundas Street West and is within walking distance from the main train station. The museum closes on Mondays and stays open until evening on Wednesdays and Fridays.
The collection holds more sculptures by Henry Moore than any other institution in North America. Baron Ken Thomson donated artworks worth several hundred million dollars to the institution years ago.
