Iglesia de San Pedro y San Pablo, Baroque church in San Fernando, Spain
The Iglesia de San Pedro y San Pablo is a baroque church in San Fernando with a rectangular floor plan and two distinctive towers with bells. The interior features a large central nave with two side aisles and a transept adjacent to the vestry.
Construction began in 1756 to replace the earlier Santa María del Castillo de San Romualdo, and the building was consecrated in 1764. It was completed in the early decades of the 19th century.
The church served as a stage for important political moments in Spanish history when representatives took their oaths here. These events have made the building a symbol of national change.
The building stands at Plaza de la Iglesia Mayor 77 with a simple color scheme and light marble flooring throughout. Visitors will find straightforward access to the interior and can easily walk through the different areas of the nave.
Beneath the main building lies a crypt locally known as the cellar, which houses the tombs of monks. This hidden space under the church remains unknown to many visitors despite being a quiet reminder of earlier religious communities.
