Teatro de las Cortes, Theatre in San Fernando, Spain
The Teatro de las Cortes is a neoclassical theatre in the center of San Fernando, a city in the province of Cádiz in southern Spain. The auditorium holds several hundred seats, and the interior features balconies and a classically designed stage area.
The theatre opened in 1804 under the name Teatro Cómico and just a few years later became the meeting place where deputies gathered to draft Spain's first modern constitution. That assembly, held in 1812, gave the building a place in the story of Spanish parliamentary history.
The Teatro de las Cortes today hosts plays, concerts, and dance shows that draw local audiences throughout the year. Its neoclassical facade blends quietly into the streets of San Fernando, giving little hint of the weight it carries in Spanish history.
Booking ahead is a good idea since the relatively small auditorium means shows tend to fill up early. The theatre sits in the center of San Fernando and is easy to reach on foot from the main streets.
When deputies gathered here in 1812, they chose the theatre because it was one of the few spaces in San Fernando large enough to hold all the delegates. That is how a comedy venue became the birthplace of Spain's first constitution, widely known as La Pepa.
