Artxanda Funicular, Funicular railway on Mount Artxanda in Bilbao, Spain.
The Artxanda Funicular is a cable railway that climbs from Campo Volantín to the summit of Mount Artxanda in around 3 minutes, covering a vertical rise of about 770 meters (2,500 feet). At the top, visitors reach a viewpoint and recreation area with walking trails and local facilities.
The funicular opened in 1915 after an engineer convinced the city to build it as a public transportation link. During the Spanish Civil War it suffered bomb damage, yet it remained largely operational throughout its long history.
The funicular links downtown Bilbao with a hilltop recreation area where you can find local restaurants serving traditional Basque food.
The funicular runs regularly throughout the day from early morning until late evening and offers a quick and simple way to reach the hilltop. Access is straightforward from downtown Bilbao, and there's plenty of time to explore and rest at the top.
The funicular experienced only two major service interruptions throughout its century-long operation, with one occurring during wartime. This reliability makes it one of the city's longest continuously running public transport lines.
