Circuito Lasarte, race track at Lasarte-Oria, Guipúzcoa, Spain
The Circuito Lasarte was a racing circuit near San Sebastián that used existing country roads stretching roughly 18 kilometers through several small towns including Lasarte, Andoáin, Urnieta, and Hernani. The track featured fast straightaways mixed with sharp turns that tested drivers and thrilled spectators.
The Circuito Lasarte was established in the 1920s and became a venue for international racing between 1926 and 1935, including the Spanish Grand Prix on several occasions. Racing came to an end following the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, and no events ever returned to the track after that period.
The old track layout can be explored by foot or car today since it follows public roads through the towns. Street names like Calle Tribunas and Paseo del Circuito mark the historic route and help you follow the path of the former racing circuit through the area.
A distinctive feature of the Circuito Lasarte was the international color coding of racing cars, where French cars were blue, British green, German silver, and Italian red. This allowed spectators to instantly recognize the nationality and origin of drivers by sight, giving the races an extra layer of national competition.
