Peña Isasa, Mountain summit in La Rioja, Spain
Peña Isasa is a mountain summit in La Rioja that rises to 1,474 meters. It sits between the Cidacos and Linares river valleys and provides views across multiple northern regions of Spain from the top.
People settled near the mountain during pre-Roman times, as shown by archaeological finds in the area. Settlement continued through the period when Christianity spread across the Iberian Peninsula.
The name Isasa comes from the Basque word 'isa(t)sa', which refers to broom, a shrub that grows across the slopes. You can still see this low vegetation covering much of the mountainside today.
The climb from Préjano follows marked trails and takes about two hours to reach the top. An alternative forest path from Turruncún provides another option if you prefer a different route.
A limestone tower with a cross crowns the summit and is visible from considerable distance. Several climbing routes with varying difficulty levels run near Turruncún if you want to reach the top by rock climbing.
