Gamonal, Urban residential district in Burgos, Spain
Gamonal extends across the plains near the Arlanzón, Vena, and Pico rivers, featuring numerous high-rise apartment buildings and commercial establishments.
The neighborhood underwent transformation from a separate municipality called Gamonal de Río Pico until 1955, when it became officially incorporated into the city of Burgos.
The district contains the Santa María la Real y Antigua church, which served as the temporary seat of the Diocese of Oca during the 11th century.
With approximately 60,000 residents, Gamonal provides extensive public transportation connections and numerous shopping facilities along Calle Vitoria, its main thoroughfare.
The name Gamonal originates from the asphodels fields that were cultivated in the area as animal feed during its agricultural past.
