Sant Joan de Boí, Romanesque church in La Vall de Boí, Spain

Sant Joan de Boí is a Romanesque church located in La Vall de Boí in the Pyrenees at approximately 1260 meters elevation, built with a basilical floor plan and a prominent bell tower. The structure features thick stone walls, small windows, and a simple yet dignified design typical of medieval mountain churches in Catalonia.

This church was built in the 11th century as part of a group of Romanesque structures in this mountain region that show how medieval architecture developed in the Pyrenees. Together with other churches in the valley, it demonstrates the building traditions and skills of medieval Catalonia.

The interior walls display medieval murals showing scenes like the Stoning of Saint Stephen and images of minstrels, reflecting the faith and daily life of people from that era. These paintings reveal how art and religious belief were woven into the spaces where the community gathered and worshiped.

The church is located in the village of Boí on a central square and is easily reached on foot, with parking available at the village entrance. This mountain location is best visited during warmer months, as winter road conditions can be challenging in the Pyrenees.

After restoration work, the interior was deliberately darkened to recreate how the church looked in the 12th century, with fresco fragments added to match pieces preserved in a museum. This choice gives visitors a rare chance to experience how the space originally appeared when the paintings were still fresh and vivid.
